What is a limb difference?
A limb difference is when a person is born missing part of a limb, or loses part of a limb later in life due to injury, illness, or surgery. Limb differences can affect arms, hands, legs, feet, fingers, or toes, and every person’s experience is unique.
Some people are born with congenital limb differences, while others become amputees later in life. Limb differences can be visible or less noticeable, and they do not define a person’s abilities, worth, or potential.
How Many People Have Limb Differences in Australia?
In Australia, it is reported around 2,500 children and young people are living with a limb difference. Limb differences generally fall into two categories: congenital limb differences, which are present at birth, and acquired limb differences, which happen later in life due to injury, illness, or medical conditions.
While exact numbers vary, limb difference and limb loss are far more common than many people realize. People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are part of this community.
Is there a Limb Difference awareness month and when is it?
Limb Difference Awareness Month in Australia is celebrated in April. This month aims to raise awareness about limb differences and support individuals living with them.

Limb Difference Awareness Week in Australia is observed from October 17 to October 23 each year.
